The following stories may fire your imagination, pique your interest. Some say 1MDB is Malaysia's Sovereign Wealth fund; to others they asked what wealth fund when its total capitalization is just One million ringgit? But, then again, if you think you can look down on the pet idea of the Malaysian prime minister, think again. His idea has the potential of turning the now world famous - or shall we say, infamous - 1Malaysia Development Berhad into a giant corporation you can ever imagine - even bigger than Bill Gate's Microsoft! At least, it could be, if the original course is stayed. It was supposed to inspire Malaysians to think big besides advance growth, according to its slogans screaming out of giant bill boards throughout the country. 'Backed' by the finance ministry who owns it - which means money will never be the problem - it can only succeed. But..it didn't. It failed! That's why it may have piqued many people's curiosity. How can a company flush with cash and can borrow any amount (billions) anytime could fail? Well, this may be in line with your thinking. People have seen since its inception - I mean after its name was changed in 1999 from Trengganu Investment Authority (TIA) to the present - it hasn't done any business! I have used present tense deliberately. It hasn't done any business yet. I mean if you are in business you need to make profit or find ways to make profit. Or close shop. Oh, I had heard about their filings of tax returns and hiring of a couple of internationally known auditors to sign off on their balance sheets; but these concerned only the company's borrowings and interests to be paid. Two massive bonds were issued to the tune of $7 billions. To buy up power plants. Again I want to say if you are in business to make money even investing in independent Power Plants, it should be done with the view to making a profit. The decision may be long term or short term, it doesn't matter, it has to make money, or no deal. May be they have done the right thing. Maybe luck was not on their side. Still, the amount is staggering. I didn't know having or managing so much money can be a problem! But many - especially the Malays - have not given up hope yet. Yes, may be the durians are just ripening; may be they need time and may fall soon!

Malaysia's Vision 2020

By:David Lang

Malaysia is supposed to be on its way to becoming a developed nation, by the year 2020. Will she make it (in less than five years -tick-tuck, tick-tuck)? There is no doubt the year 2020 is coming whether the country is ready or not, and if that will be the only requirement then Malaysia will attain that developed nation status on schedule. There is a question, though, Will Malaysia, or Malaysians, for that matter, be ready for that status as far as their affluence, quality of life's concern? Currently Malaysia's GNI per capita stood at US$10060. According to the World Bank high income economies are those with GNI per capita of US$12,745. And until Malaysians earn much more to be there, the developed nation status may not be achieved even by the year 2020. The futility of declaring a country a high income country when it's not, achieves nothing. May be even counter-productive; it lulls the country into false sense of success and premature celebration. Don't forget China reportedly overtook Japan as the world's second largest economy, but in actual fact China's citizens' ca pita income is a fraction of the incomes of the Japanese who earn $37,000. Chinese incomes range from $13,000. China's gross domestic product, taken as a whole, may beat Japan's, but in term of quality of life, and GNI per capita income, the criteria for a developed nation status, China still has a lot of catching up to do. That's why China still qualifies as recipient of Japan's economic aid meant for developing countries. Comparing with the Chinese per capita domestic product, Malaysia is even worse off. Unless the government bucks up and rushes to create more wealth for its citizens, the Vision 2020 dream may remain just that ..a dream.

'MCA go home' vs 'Where was DAP 13 years ago?' at Jonker Walk

'MCA go home' vs 'Where was DAP 13 years ago?' at Jonker Walk
What?! Gan qualified his being there as a survey, not to protest? Let alone to lead the protest? Did Mr. Gan Tian Loo realize that the MCA protest carries more weight than DAP protest many times over. The state government, being UMNO-led government, considers the DAP as the opposition working hand-in-hand with PAS and PKR to oust UMNO from power, rescinding the directive on the request from DAP leaders will make the party even more popular. I thought, at first, here come the MCA, finally to do what it's supposed to do. Then the expected  happened. He got cold feet. The reporter who covered the protest reported Gan was suddenly cautious . He was like ..."I'm here to lend my support to..the .. no, wait! I am not here to support the traders - but just to do a quick survey! But I am glad to be standing here with the protesters but reporters, please put it down in black and white I am not, I repeat, am not here as part of the protest. This is the reason the MCA was shunned, I mean has been shunned by the Chinese. They do not represent the Chinese anymore. They cannot get things done anymore unlike in the old days. Gan admitted his meeting with the chief minister was fruitless, but would keep trying. Keep trying for what? He should stop embarrassing the MCA and reducing its credibility further by continuing to beg despite being rebuffed earlier. Again, this proved that the Malaysian Chinese Association has really completely lost its usefulness. If a small matter like Jonker Walk closure was beyond its power then, that 's it.

McDonald knows the pigs are for protein eventually, but before that fateful day or hour arrives, at least make their ordeal less toturing.

I congratulate McDonald for its responsible and caring attitude.

Needless to say, I have always been McDonald's regular customer where I live even before this kind act was mentioned. Now, and in the future, if I want to treat friends, or friends want to treat me but haven't decided where to go, I will recommend McDonald! Like Lee wished, I hope McDonald carries out its plan sooner.

Thank you, McDonald.

Give it time folks. If this administration gets in another 4 years this country will be run by the Muslim brotherhood!

Conan asked, when told by his bumbling sidekick in the movie, Conan The Destroyer, that the gods were not pleased: "Are you surprised?" I asked: "Are you surprised, that the Muslim Brotherhood are furious that they have been thwarted just when they thought their plots and plans, including lies when necessary, in order to take over Egypt begin to bear fruits; and the US government was beside itself with frustration when their favorite the MB was not about to rule Egypt as they wished after all.

It's an open secret that a way was purposely paved by this administration to allow the Muslim Brotherhood to rise.

During his infamous Cairo speech, did you know that Obama insisted to President Hosni Mubarak the MB be allowed to be among the audience of his his speech at the Islamic University! Mubarak had little choice; he gave in. I don't know if the Muslim Brotherhood thumbed their nose at him as a celebration of their first victory. Not only that; Obama also left no room for doubt in his speech whom he's rooting for, when he told - or shall we say goaded, his audience: "You have the universal right to determine who rules Egypt (you). If your government doesn't listen to your demands, fight them he said; for your rights!" And fight they did. Chaos and mayhem were the order of the days in Egypt after that infamous speech.

The revolutionary youths, as they labelled themselves, filled the Tahrir square to capacity to demand the downfall of President Mubarak, anything less was not acceptable.

During the height of the turmoil, encouraging sound from President Obama himself continued unabated: "We hear you! Oh, brave people of Egypt; never lose hope, continue until victory! The US is on your side! We support your demands for the government to resign! Soon you will be able to enjoy the same life that Americans enjoy in America! The US stands willing and ready to help bring your revolution to success."

It's a well-known fact that the Pentagon, the state department and the president himself arm-twisted Mubarak to step down; when he refused, they worked on the Egyptian military, the backbone of Mubarak's power, and they worked flawlessly! They succeeded after repeated attempts to force the generals to disown Mubarak, and the Egyptian president fell like ten pins!

It's still not clear why the Obama administration worked so hard to promote an institution that promotes tears, heartache, death and destruction to the world. Why not just give lip service? And why want to destroy something that brought peace and less destruction to the world? Mubarak, despite his faults, had worked endlessly to promote peace between Israel and its neighbors and saved thousands of lives.

Because of Mubarak, President Bashar of Syria became less aggressive toward the Jewish state. While Mubarak didn't stop bloodshed totally, he contributed a great deal to reducing it.

And what did he get for his service? He was humiliated, prosecuted, sent to prison after he gave up powers at the insistence of President Obama!

Without the interference of the US government, Mubarak would still be in power today and his health wouldn't have deteriorated so rapidly; the state of Israel would not have to contend with frequent incursions from the Sinai territory which it gave back to Egypt to earn goodwill.

During the time the MB was campaigning for votes it hid its fangs temporarily in order to fool the Egyptian people, women and the Coptic Christians. But after it did well by blackmail and lies - that those who did not vote for it would not go to heaven - suddenly decided being part of the main stream political system was all it wanted previously but not anymore. It now wanted to control Egypt completely. They used the mosques and the sermons to great advantage.

They promised they are not power hungry; would not run for president. They would be moderate to everyone.

But once they had made some headway (in parliament), they had conveniently forgotten those words. They threatened Israel regularly, including abrogation of the peace treaty with the Jews. Threats to cut off gas supplies were the norm now.

It's not clear why they always want to be bad or do bad things to other people. Why can't it live in peace with the Jewish state, which is far from meaning harm to Egypt?

Perhaps that's their way and culture. Fine by me; provided they could come up (rise up) through their own efforts, not having their path paved by the US president. Even to run for the office of the Egyptian president, they reportedly sought the green light from Washington. But still they had the gall to be unfriendly to the Jewish state which is supposed to be protected by the US government. Funny, they didn't even pretend to be friendly to the Jews to be in the good book of the US government.

Perhaps they knew all the US administrations pledge to protect Israel's security but..it seemed to them, the Obama administration has no intention to standby that pledge.

If a war broke out between the Jewish state and its Arab neighbors, and Israel, despite its superior military force, was seen as in dire need of help, this administration will come to Israel's help alright but...with a high price asked; so high that it would be humiliating for Israel. And Obama would trumpet his good deed round the clock; his legion of talk show host supporters will give their all to praise the president 24/7 for another success story of his presidency.

If that's all that ever happened to the Jewish state, they should thank their luck stars. For Obama might even force them to not only stop building new settlements, but to uproot all the old ones, including shrinking Israel back to before 1967!

Obama had made clear he supports the Palestinian demands for Israel to shrink, so that they can take over its lucrative farms and fresh water sources. There would be no love lost between between the president and Israel, in any case.

Rlquoll,

I am sorry, I screwed up. I meant to say ..'bombed Libya back to the stone age.'

By the way, I don't disagree with your post on Syria.

My opinion? Syria is a victim of a conspiracy by the Gulf Cooperation Countries led by Saudi Arabia, and a betrayal by once a good neighbor, Turkey. But this stab-in-the-back by Turkey happened without any provocation or reason except a new foray by its new prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He seemed to desire to join President Obama in creating and leaving a legacy for next generations to admire. Otherwise, why would he act like so to his old friend, President Bashar of Syria. As far as I know, they have had no known issues to grudge over.

To better understand him, think back to the time when Libya was the victim of the no-fly zone and other efforts to topple Qaddafi then. I remember Turkey went in to try to arrange with Col. Qaddafi to allow for the evacuation of westerners and other hostages through Misrata port and to bring in much needed supplies, due to its friendly relations with Libya, of course. Later, however, it turned enemy towards Libya and supported the NATO bombing. So, there you have it. So what can you expect from a friend like Turkey? It's very unpredictable, if you ask me. President Bashar knows only too well how good a friend his neighbor had been or could be, provided he wanted to..

To cut the story short, Turkey's behavior was not unlike that of fishing in troubled waters.

The Turkish prime minister, bolstered by his triumph over the Turkish military, seemed to long to project his influence over the Middle East, where the Ottoman Empire once ruled much over 600 years, and had been poking his nose into many people's affairs lately.

If he's looking for a chance to give somebody a bloodied nose and increase his standing in the international arena, this is it. Capture a few border areas of Syria and force Assad to negotiate a withdrawal of Turkish forces - at a price! But let's hope he doesn't end up receiving a drubbing from Assad, instead! What I think is: he won't try anything. The recent incident of Turkish plane shot down was nothing, according to experts, other than Turkey's probing of Syrian air defenses or its preparedness. To their disappointment, Syria's air defense systems proved to be what he or the West feared.

We are in for spectacular air and ground battles in a Syrian war if it comes to that, that likely brings the picture of the epic 1967 war between the entire Arab nation and Israel. Like Israel, Syria is like a cornered dog. Either it uses its jaws to destroy its enemies or be destroyed!

Don't expect me to look forward to this epic battle, though.
