The following stories may fire your imagination, pique your interest. Some say 1MDB is Malaysia's Sovereign Wealth fund; to others they asked what wealth fund when its total capitalization is just One million ringgit? But, then again, if you think you can look down on the pet idea of the Malaysian prime minister, think again. His idea has the potential of turning the now world famous - or shall we say, infamous - 1Malaysia Development Berhad into a giant corporation you can ever imagine - even bigger than Bill Gate's Microsoft! At least, it could be, if the original course is stayed. It was supposed to inspire Malaysians to think big besides advance growth, according to its slogans screaming out of giant bill boards throughout the country. 'Backed' by the finance ministry who owns it - which means money will never be the problem - it can only succeed. But..it didn't. It failed! That's why it may have piqued many people's curiosity. How can a company flush with cash and can borrow any amount (billions) anytime could fail? Well, this may be in line with your thinking. People have seen since its inception - I mean after its name was changed in 1999 from Trengganu Investment Authority (TIA) to the present - it hasn't done any business! I have used present tense deliberately. It hasn't done any business yet. I mean if you are in business you need to make profit or find ways to make profit. Or close shop. Oh, I had heard about their filings of tax returns and hiring of a couple of internationally known auditors to sign off on their balance sheets; but these concerned only the company's borrowings and interests to be paid. Two massive bonds were issued to the tune of $7 billions. To buy up power plants. Again I want to say if you are in business to make money even investing in independent Power Plants, it should be done with the view to making a profit. The decision may be long term or short term, it doesn't matter, it has to make money, or no deal. May be they have done the right thing. Maybe luck was not on their side. Still, the amount is staggering. I didn't know having or managing so much money can be a problem! But many - especially the Malays - have not given up hope yet. Yes, may be the durians are just ripening; may be they need time and may fall soon!

Malaysia's Vision 2020

By:David Lang

Malaysia is supposed to be on its way to becoming a developed nation, by the year 2020. Will she make it (in less than five years -tick-tuck, tick-tuck)? There is no doubt the year 2020 is coming whether the country is ready or not, and if that will be the only requirement then Malaysia will attain that developed nation status on schedule. There is a question, though, Will Malaysia, or Malaysians, for that matter, be ready for that status as far as their affluence, quality of life's concern? Currently Malaysia's GNI per capita stood at US$10060. According to the World Bank high income economies are those with GNI per capita of US$12,745. And until Malaysians earn much more to be there, the developed nation status may not be achieved even by the year 2020. The futility of declaring a country a high income country when it's not, achieves nothing. May be even counter-productive; it lulls the country into false sense of success and premature celebration. Don't forget China reportedly overtook Japan as the world's second largest economy, but in actual fact China's citizens' ca pita income is a fraction of the incomes of the Japanese who earn $37,000. Chinese incomes range from $13,000. China's gross domestic product, taken as a whole, may beat Japan's, but in term of quality of life, and GNI per capita income, the criteria for a developed nation status, China still has a lot of catching up to do. That's why China still qualifies as recipient of Japan's economic aid meant for developing countries. Comparing with the Chinese per capita domestic product, Malaysia is even worse off. Unless the government bucks up and rushes to create more wealth for its citizens, the Vision 2020 dream may remain just that ..a dream.

'MCA go home' vs 'Where was DAP 13 years ago?' at Jonker Walk

'MCA go home' vs 'Where was DAP 13 years ago?' at Jonker Walk
What?! Gan qualified his being there as a survey, not to protest? Let alone to lead the protest? Did Mr. Gan Tian Loo realize that the MCA protest carries more weight than DAP protest many times over. The state government, being UMNO-led government, considers the DAP as the opposition working hand-in-hand with PAS and PKR to oust UMNO from power, rescinding the directive on the request from DAP leaders will make the party even more popular. I thought, at first, here come the MCA, finally to do what it's supposed to do. Then the expected  happened. He got cold feet. The reporter who covered the protest reported Gan was suddenly cautious . He was like ..."I'm here to lend my support to..the .. no, wait! I am not here to support the traders - but just to do a quick survey! But I am glad to be standing here with the protesters but reporters, please put it down in black and white I am not, I repeat, am not here as part of the protest. This is the reason the MCA was shunned, I mean has been shunned by the Chinese. They do not represent the Chinese anymore. They cannot get things done anymore unlike in the old days. Gan admitted his meeting with the chief minister was fruitless, but would keep trying. Keep trying for what? He should stop embarrassing the MCA and reducing its credibility further by continuing to beg despite being rebuffed earlier. Again, this proved that the Malaysian Chinese Association has really completely lost its usefulness. If a small matter like Jonker Walk closure was beyond its power then, that 's it.

China Can Boast Of Chengdu Stealth Fighter It Has Never Been Tested! Checked.

By David Lang

May 28, 2017 Updated Today: December 09, 2017

If there is the time to confront China over its expansionist designs with scant regards for others' rights, it's now. China's military power is limited compared to the US power, and they know that. That's the reason it didn't explode in anger at Rex Tillerson's threat to disallow China's access to South China Sea islands it had "annexed unilaterally and clandestinely over the last few months. China also had to resort to amplifying its military might to discourage its foes - by engaging pliable Western journalists or analysts to boost its "formidable military powers." This is the phrase that Western journalists paid to do their jobs used to exaggerate China's military power.

However, even China itself knows there is much limit to its armed forces capability. It openly sent an ICBM missiles into space to allegedly pulverize its own satellite in recent past to prove to its foes what it can do to its enemies.

But chest-thumping and asking bought western journalists to exaggerate its power will not guarantee its success in real battle, except battle of the minds which it had won hands down vis-a-vis the US under President Barack Obama, including countries such as Australia and New Zealand.

During his first term as US commander-in-chief, Obama openly displayed his inexperience and cowardice to the world when he rolled back agreements to station ballistic missiles in Poland and other Eastern European states which George W. Bush had painstakingly negotiated to secure, just like that just because the Russians were not happy and bluffing to restart heavy bombers patrol of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

This did not go unnoticed by powers in Beijing especially.
Div>
Emboldened by Obama's weak leadership, China did the unthinkable to US far-flung US naval power to force it to retreat. When S. Korea and the US tried to start annual naval exercise in the international waters near China which they have been doing for decades, China ordered the two countries to hold their exercise elsewhere, and they obeyed.

From that day onward, China became the de facto sole super power of the world replacing the US, in the mind at least.

China after tasting that super power feeling had never looked back until today. It, however, knew its superiority was in the mind only, faked if you will, for it was not backed by superior weapon systems like the US's. It may have benefited somewhat from purchasing Israeli technology; but Israel would not be foolish to leak to the Chinese secrets that could undermine their safety in the unlikely event China embraces the Palestinian side.

The fact that China didn't spring to Israeli help in the UN recently when resolution banning new settlements were allowed to be passed by the US, its closest ally in the Middle East - proved China didn't benefit greatly from technology transfer by the Israeli authorities.

Nevertheless, China has come a long way from the time when it had to depend on Russian help even to build some fighter planes or bombers. Now it can boast of stealth fighters comparable the US's best, which no doubt was suspected of coming about due to blue-print spirited out of the US by Oversea Chinese who wanted to help their motherland. Besides, China is also nuclear-armed and possesses a three-million army (vis-a-vis US' 2.5 million), and an infant navy of moderate size with one air-craft carrier.

China Expected to Be Busy Protecting Its Sole Carrier From Being Sunk!

Therefore, if China was expected to win in an unlikely conflict between China and the US, it would only do it psychologically. If hypothetically history is repeated and Obama resumes his post of president for the third term, yes, China would prevail or give the US (under Obama, of course) a run for its money.

Realistically, and this is bad news for China and its people, in a conventional or nuclear wars China based on its pesent strength will be no match for resurgent America especially fired up by Donald Trump.

Therefore, China after recovering from the startle of rhetoric of the new commander-in-chief, sprang into action to search for answers to the new dawn of American-Chinese relations. After it appeared that they had realized their clandestine and illegal seizure of land/sea in the South China Sea had been exposed, coupled with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson' warning that China must be told to stop its artificial island building and that its future access to those islands it built also be disallowed, Chinese leaders of all levels and men and women in the streets as well as the media, especially the Global Times, devoted the whole month to chastising President-elect Trump, and railed against the idea that they stole other people's land. As part of psychological war, they boasted China as a superpower, nuclear-armed, and has over-whelming military force to defeat any foes. To back up their claims, they staged almost daily naval exercises with J-20 stealth fighters and its sole aircraft-carrier Liaoning in full display to flaunt their awesome power!

According to western reporters who witness the display of its might, China has a long way to go before it could match up with the US. The only battle China for the present and for the near future, can win is psychological one. Although it may have three millions People's Liberation Front army against the US's 2.5 million, America can gain air superiority quickly and once that is achieved, China's sole carrier could be sunk early in the battle - putting paid to the much hyped J-20 stealth fighter. Analysts opined China should not base their strength on J-20 as it has yet to be tested in real fight!

According to western analyst not paid to write, China's artificial islands in the South China Sea could be destroyed in minutes if the US makes use of its carrier task force USS Carl Vinson now stationed in the area!

So the Chinese side need to warn Trump against humiliating President Xi!

The idea that President Xi could be humiliated which could precipitate his toppling in China which Xi would do his all to prevent. So President Trump should scale down his expectation from President Xi or he will be disappointed.

Don't forget the events in the 2nd world war when America was not well-armed as it was not at wars with any country then, and was unprepared when Japan launched a surprise attack on Perl Harbor and destroyed most of its best warships - but was able to arm itself easily and in no time to take the fight to Japan's shore and soundly defeated it.

The reality is unmistakable - China can only bluff as far as the US is concerned. May be that's the intent of China to bluff to deter its foes while secretly it rushes to modernize its armed forces and weapon systems to make it on par with the US'.

The reality is therefore if Trump wants to contains China without having to go to a bruising war, it had to be done before China becomes stronger, which is: now! With one carrier China lacks air superiority which it crucially needs to protect its warships. China may use human power to try to swim to detonate torpedo against American warships; but with air power the US could kill millions in just one day if it adopted the same way NATO did not too long ago to bomb Libya back to utter defeat.

The only way China could survive is to resort to the UN resolution to force a ceasefire. But it's up to President Trump how the US would respond to request for cessation of hostilities. Then, he may even demand that China drop its objection to restoring Taiwan's membership to the UN as a full veto-holding nation.

Overkill? Maybe. Maybe not. Overkill or not we have to wait until the MCA says. So far the party has not reacted. The hiatus could mean many things. They are deciding what to do, how to act; waiting for the right time; trying to gather their courage, or having cold feet, again?

I hope the "sold-out" performance by the Gan Tian Loo of Jonker Walk fame would not be repeated here. This matter is more serious than the Malacca chief minister's wanting to kill the golden goose which lays the golden eggs. A young couple in their early twenties was sent to prison for showing disrespect to Muslim fasting month, not too long ago. For which they had apologized. The irony - or shall we say sad thing - was their critics failed to be magnanimous enough even during Rhamadan to forgive them.

I think Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee have mostly themselves to blame.. because of the bad publicity that preceded them. Malaysians, especially those who have lost respect and fellowship for the Chinese people, needn't have to feel shamed for acting unreasonably or unjustly against them and they didn't. They are Malaysians, although Vivian was reported to have come from Singapore, they should know in a polarized situation such as in our country, we should be careful not to cause a misunderstanding, let alone showing disrespect to Muslim Fasting Month. Even a small matter could be blown out of proportion with disastrous consequences. But what's done can't be undone. The only thing they can hope for is that Muslims in Malaysia, especially during this holy month of cleansing, will have it in their hearts the kindness to forgive their indiscreet act.

So far we don't know what the majority of the Malays feel about this episode. Whether they see it as a mistake made by a human being, which anyone of us can make, and feel kind enough to give them another chance, they are not saying. The tightly controlled lifestyle in which the Malays live under in Malaysia could be the explanation. What we heard were from those baying for their blood. Perhaps they (the young pair) thought they could only be charged under the Multimedia and Communication Act and the penalty prescribed by the law, if found guilty, shall not be more than 5 years, and with the judges in Malaysia normally prone to temper decisions with mercy and reduce the sentences, they could even get away with just a fine! Well, they thought wrong!

True, in normal situation the attorney general would be reluctant even to charge at all, let alone with three laws! But in this case the attorney general had decided to charge them so severely that they better get a really good lawyer to defend them or they would suffer. If I were them I would hire Mohamad Shaffee Abdullah as my #1 lawyer and number 2 as Sitambaram. I apologize to other as capable lawyers for not including their names here.

Or a divine intervention. Allah the Maha Merciful and Maha forgiving may cause the attorney general to rethink. That's what they can look forward to as this a fasting month. Muslims are kinder and more generous during this holy month. Abdul Gani Pitai is a Muslim. But, then again, additional help could also come from another intervention. From the MCA leaders, who many people are quick rush to dismiss as ineffective as they are loath to confront their erstwhile colleagues in UMNO but who are well placed to do so if they wish as it was their job. Hence even UMNO would understand MCA leaders have no need to fear repercussion

Many have described the Chinese leaders in Barisan as subsevient to UMNO leaders. If so that's a new phenomenon and UMNO deserves credit for having psyched the MCA into submission. But as the clock is ticking, the Chinese people, including UMNO people - the unintended beneficiaries of the so-called subservience of MCA or Gerakan leaders - turned towards MCA leaders. They are watching - the Chinese skeptically and hopefully; UMNO, nervously, as they themselves may have realized they had gone too far by going berserk in charging the sex bloggers with three laws, which even Malay lawyers condemned as excessive, overkill.
According to many Chinese even proceeding to charge the couple under under subsection 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 ...was too much, let alone under three Acts simultaneously, pointing out no action was taken against other offenders. But, again, the attorney general by law has the final say who to face the music if the broke the law. He can charge them with ten Acts if he so wished. There's nothing we ordinary Malaysians could do. But not the MCA which was founded with the noble aim of safeguarding the rights of Chinese, and which is the second largest founding members of Barisan Nasional. So far the silence from the MCA (spelled: Malaysian Chinese Association) was deafening. If they don't act as expected, it would not definitely be because they have no cause to. They certainly do. Championing their community's interests was the only object of the MCA. Granted their actions had been known to be dismal for quite sometime, but people can change. MCA leaders have every opportunity and ability to fix the MCA problems. It can kill in the bud the notion that MCA is afraid of UMNO! What's so frightening about UMNO? Is the MCA Headquarters renting its space from UMNO property and worrying that UMNO would not extend the tenancy agreement? This is ridiculous - there's no other way to describe it. If that's the case why the MCA not look for other other landlord. But that's not the case at all, I just presumed to illustrate my point. UMNO people are ordinary people just like the MCA people. It's a matter of duty and political will. There's no reason whatsoever why they should kowtow to UMNO.

Except...when MCA leaders battle each other every three years for president, deputy President; vice-president, secretary general and central working committee members, they have been resorting to purportedly getting the endorsement of the prime minister to jockey for highest or second highest positions in the MCA which I frown upon. It was begun by MIC (if I can remember clearly) and was adopted by MCA leaders too not too long ago.

They (the endorsements) may have paved the way for victories but, alas, the winners can't forget who helped them to be in their positions, can they? This is disastrous for the MCA - to perform what's expected of it. First and foremost they have to earn (regain) the respect of Malaysians. Especially the Chinese' and UMNO leaders', whichever first and they can never do that until they treat UMNO as their fellow BN members nothing more!

This is easier said than done, though. And the fault partly lies with the Chinese themselves who often time resorted to calling the MCA names, such as lap-dogs, subservient, junior brothers, ball-carriers who are accused of being afraid to fight for Chinese interests when confronted with their UMNO counterparts in the cabinet; the MCA became ineffective as a result with their inferiority complex gnawing them. They balked at confronting the prime minister and his UMNO ministers, leading to even worse deriding and mocking from the community; and UMNO was also far from blameless, too. While we cannot accuse UMNO leaders of inventing the big brother small brother relationship between the two largest component members of Barisan Nasional to lord over MCA leaders, or coined those big-small-borther names it was equally wrong to allow it to fester, in the first place, instead of nipping the so-called subservience labeling in the bud. It could deny that the MCA was afraid of offending UMNO (leaders). Afraid to come to aid of Chinese people, people like the two sex bloggers. And UMNO didn't help matter by its going berserk in charging the young couple which many people called excessive with multiple Acts.

For one, this amounted to UMNO leaders disregarding the feelings of their fellow BN component member's leaders and amounting to not giving face to MCA top leaders like Wee Ka Siong and former Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai, for instance, who were never accused of stabbing their UMNO colleagues in the backs. On the contrary, MCA leaders have been known to be loyal to the cause of BN. While I am not accusing UMNO of any wrongdoing in perpetuating the so-called concept of Ketuanan Melayu versus their MCA colleagues, UMNO leaders didn't seem to be complaining about being (labelled) big brothers to the MCA leaders. This sometimes was more than perception. In fact, if I am not mistaken, Some MCA leaders complained they were more often than not not entertained when they approached their UMNO colleagues who hold all important portfolios for favors for their Chinese community. By not being averse to being called the big brothers, UMNO erred big time. The MCA was and still is, the second largest party in BN after UMNO. It was a mistake if UMNO leaders continued to treat the MCA as second fiddle. Not equal partner as was during Tun Dr. Mahathir's time. The party will not be able regain the trust and support of the Chinese community, and just guess who loses out? BN!

During Tun's administration, the MCA was very well respected, and Tun made sure it remained that way. Tun calculated that the Chinese community was huge, second only to Malay community. He knew the importance of that. That's why when the Chinese (leaders) quarreled he asked Tun Gaffar Baba to mediate. Under Tun's watch, the MCA and extension, the Chinese and the Malays were harmoniously united. And no such things as UMNO members or division leaders dared to protest against Gerakan or MCA leaders, let alone stomping on Chinese leaders pictures who he was visiting (like what happened when former Prime Minister Abdullad Ahmad Badawi was in Penang and in a building in Bishop Street having 4-eye meeting with then Penang Chief Minister Tan sri Koh Tsu Koon while outside UMNO members probably from Balik Pulau branch held a demonstration outside, during which picture of the chief minister was defaced and stomped on with contempt.

What was their griping nobody knows. But they didn't even respect or give face to their party president and prime minister. If this thing happened during Tun's time and under his nose, heads will roll. I can't recall whether the prime minister (Tun Abdullah Badawi) disciplined those rowdy members. Perhaps Pak Lah was not an emotional type due to his deep religious training. He was a moderate Muslim and a forgiving type. And as a result Allah blessed him, he didn't need to take high blood pressure medicine! And this writer also wishes him a long life.

That was when this junior partners senior partner name calling surfaced. During Pak Lah's 'work-with-me-not-work-for-me' administration! First, he rebuffed non-Malay cabinet members, who were cheeky enough to approach with Pak Lah in Putrajaya with the view to present their demands for the non-Malay communities. By then Pak Lah's control of the country as well as UMNO supreme council was slipping. But that does not mean he's resigning or being toppled. While his administration was weakened by his winning only 140 seats and losing the 2/3rd majority, he could allow his deputy prime minister Najb Tun Razak to wait as long as he wished. He alone would decide when to resign. But then he realized he had overstayed his welcome already, and resigned. There you have it. The man responsible for turning the once powerful MCA into a toothless tiger. A party which had seen its best days. But I am not suggesting the Chinese should hate Pak Lah. No! What Pak Lah did (the turning down of the non-Malay leaders' demands) was not malicious. He had to. He was not a dictator like Saddam Hussein. He had to take UMNO supreme council's views into consideration.

Still, many Malaysians miss Pak Lah now. He is a prime minister who cared for all Malaysians including the Chinese. If, say, Pak Lah wishes to make a come back I am sure a lot of Chinese, including yours truly, will support him again! Well, that was then. Now is now. For the mother of Alvin Tan, who also showed concern for her son's girlfriend, this was the black day for the family. Her son's sent to prison! To make sure he does turn up to face charges in court when their trial starts. She got into the news when she gives notice to the government to not let anything happen to her son in prison. While the authorities allow her that right, the attorney general also have the final say by law in this country to charge or not or appeal or not. And in this case he not only decided to charge but charge under three Acts simultaneously!

The sex bloggers can forget about getting out without punishment as one of the charges, if not all, will stick. The attorney general had no choice but to act in a way that satisfied public demands.

Now they better get cracking and submitting all the appeals they could legally submit if they don't want a long prison term or a punitive crippling fine.

Although the country was stunned with the decision of the government to charge them with not one but three Acts simultaneously, there is almost nothing anybody could help them now. I mention almost ..yes, that's right..The situation may seem hopeless but three or four things could still happen. Since this a holy month for the Muslims, Allah the Maha Merciful may intervene and save the couple from their miseries. A kind Malay and an influential Malay may step forward and ask the government to give Alvin and Vivian a second chance. If this happened, the reconciliation that the prime minister proposed will work like magic. The Chinese community will forever view the Malay community with respect and fondness. But as I said not matter how many people lambasted the government for selective prosecution or double standard, or overkill in charging the young couple under three different laws, it makes no difference unless ...unless the MCA agrees it's overkill. And does something about it. So far their silence was deafening. It's not wise to jump to conclusion, though, that the MCA had failed to do what they're supposed to do, again. The hiatus so far could mean: the top leaders of Datuk Liow Tiong Lai and Wee Ka Siong caliber (pictured above) could be trying to figure things out, planning their moves, trying to gather their courage, or getting cold feet. But seriously, if the new leaders of MCA want to affect change in order to regain the trust and support of the community, this is their golden chance. Repeat what the the former non-Malay leaders of Barisan component parties did when they collectively met and presented Pak Lah with a set of demands but failed..to move Pak Lah.

Only this time only MCA leaders are involved. They should demand that the young Chinese couple should not only be treated fairly but should be seen to be treated fairly. No double standard. Failing which, the MCA should be prepared to stand their ground (unlike those original non-Malay leaders who approached Pak Lah who left empty-handed). There is nothing UMNO or its leaders could do to them except threaten to cut ties or expel the MCA from the coalition. My opinion is UMNO has a lot to lose and the MCA little to lose. I don't think UMNO wants to risk the disintegration of the Barisan Nasional over a pair of crazy bloggers whose disrespect to the fasting month was not a crime according to many lawyers, among them Muslims themselves. Moreover, they had apologized and asked for forgiveness.

I hope the new set of MCA leaders who would effectively be future leaders of the Chinese community, would not emulate the MCA Malacca's leader's Gan Tian Loo's actions during the Jonker Walk protests. As I said this is the golden opportunity for the MCA leaders to do the right thing for once, and about time, too. There is no need to be subservient to anyone. Don't forget UMNO needs the MCA as much as the MCA needs UMNO. I am sure UMNO remembers when it was down it was the MCA, no one else, that came to UMNO's aid. Now it's time UMNO returned the favor! Long live UMNO and MCA! Long live Barisan Nasional!
