The following stories may fire your imagination, pique your interest. Some say 1MDB is Malaysia's Sovereign Wealth fund; to others they asked what wealth fund when its total capitalization is just One million ringgit? But, then again, if you think you can look down on the pet idea of the Malaysian prime minister, think again. His idea has the potential of turning the now world famous - or shall we say, infamous - 1Malaysia Development Berhad into a giant corporation you can ever imagine - even bigger than Bill Gate's Microsoft! At least, it could be, if the original course is stayed. It was supposed to inspire Malaysians to think big besides advance growth, according to its slogans screaming out of giant bill boards throughout the country. 'Backed' by the finance ministry who owns it - which means money will never be the problem - it can only succeed. But..it didn't. It failed! That's why it may have piqued many people's curiosity. How can a company flush with cash and can borrow any amount (billions) anytime could fail? Well, this may be in line with your thinking. People have seen since its inception - I mean after its name was changed in 1999 from Trengganu Investment Authority (TIA) to the present - it hasn't done any business! I have used present tense deliberately. It hasn't done any business yet. I mean if you are in business you need to make profit or find ways to make profit. Or close shop. Oh, I had heard about their filings of tax returns and hiring of a couple of internationally known auditors to sign off on their balance sheets; but these concerned only the company's borrowings and interests to be paid. Two massive bonds were issued to the tune of $7 billions. To buy up power plants. Again I want to say if you are in business to make money even investing in independent Power Plants, it should be done with the view to making a profit. The decision may be long term or short term, it doesn't matter, it has to make money, or no deal. May be they have done the right thing. Maybe luck was not on their side. Still, the amount is staggering. I didn't know having or managing so much money can be a problem! But many - especially the Malays - have not given up hope yet. Yes, may be the durians are just ripening; may be they need time and may fall soon!

Malaysia's Vision 2020

By:David Lang

Malaysia is supposed to be on its way to becoming a developed nation, by the year 2020. Will she make it (in less than five years -tick-tuck, tick-tuck)? There is no doubt the year 2020 is coming whether the country is ready or not, and if that will be the only requirement then Malaysia will attain that developed nation status on schedule. There is a question, though, Will Malaysia, or Malaysians, for that matter, be ready for that status as far as their affluence, quality of life's concern? Currently Malaysia's GNI per capita stood at US$10060. According to the World Bank high income economies are those with GNI per capita of US$12,745. And until Malaysians earn much more to be there, the developed nation status may not be achieved even by the year 2020. The futility of declaring a country a high income country when it's not, achieves nothing. May be even counter-productive; it lulls the country into false sense of success and premature celebration. Don't forget China reportedly overtook Japan as the world's second largest economy, but in actual fact China's citizens' ca pita income is a fraction of the incomes of the Japanese who earn $37,000. Chinese incomes range from $13,000. China's gross domestic product, taken as a whole, may beat Japan's, but in term of quality of life, and GNI per capita income, the criteria for a developed nation status, China still has a lot of catching up to do. That's why China still qualifies as recipient of Japan's economic aid meant for developing countries. Comparing with the Chinese per capita domestic product, Malaysia is even worse off. Unless the government bucks up and rushes to create more wealth for its citizens, the Vision 2020 dream may remain just that ..a dream.

'MCA go home' vs 'Where was DAP 13 years ago?' at Jonker Walk

'MCA go home' vs 'Where was DAP 13 years ago?' at Jonker Walk
What?! Gan qualified his being there as a survey, not to protest? Let alone to lead the protest? Did Mr. Gan Tian Loo realize that the MCA protest carries more weight than DAP protest many times over. The state government, being UMNO-led government, considers the DAP as the opposition working hand-in-hand with PAS and PKR to oust UMNO from power, rescinding the directive on the request from DAP leaders will make the party even more popular. I thought, at first, here come the MCA, finally to do what it's supposed to do. Then the expected  happened. He got cold feet. The reporter who covered the protest reported Gan was suddenly cautious . He was like ..."I'm here to lend my support to..the .. no, wait! I am not here to support the traders - but just to do a quick survey! But I am glad to be standing here with the protesters but reporters, please put it down in black and white I am not, I repeat, am not here as part of the protest. This is the reason the MCA was shunned, I mean has been shunned by the Chinese. They do not represent the Chinese anymore. They cannot get things done anymore unlike in the old days. Gan admitted his meeting with the chief minister was fruitless, but would keep trying. Keep trying for what? He should stop embarrassing the MCA and reducing its credibility further by continuing to beg despite being rebuffed earlier. Again, this proved that the Malaysian Chinese Association has really completely lost its usefulness. If a small matter like Jonker Walk closure was beyond its power then, that 's it.

MCA Must Demand The Return Of All Traditional MCA Cabinet Posts

The MCA Leaders Skould Demand The Return Of All MCA Ministerial Posts

KOOMAR, what Law Maker meant, if I am not wrong, was sarcasm. It means irony, sic, or sneering. You never feel anything unless you're the particular target. But some people can misunderstand, too. How wonderful is the English language!Checked.

I say give the new MCA leaders a chance to prove themselves. To do that they need to rejoin the cabinet, and regain their cabinet portfolios on loan to Hishammudin and MIC leaders. Checked.

The MIC leaders knew their occupying of Health Ministry - which traditionally belong to MCA - was to be only temporary. I say go ahead Datuk Liow Tiong Lai. My only question is what took you so long? Checked.

Yes, I agree you should ask your party, especially the Wanita wing, to stop attacking the DAP. What they hope to get? Remember those who attacked Lim Guan Eng unjustly fared even worse in the eyes of the Chinese and the Malays. Take him to task over genuine mistakes and you will be rewarded with renewed support from the Chinese community. Checked.

You can not expect everything to return to rosy like in the past as soon as you rejoin the cabinet, but it's the right move. Don't forget, the more ministers you have in the government the more clout you have and the more ways to reach out to the Chinese who, don't ever forget, were and will be skeptical. But once the Chinese see you and numerous ministers performing well they may give you support. Ignore the jibes and sneering, concentrate on regaining all ministries which traditionally belong to the MCA. Don't compromise on this. You yourself should return to your old post as health minister. Checked.

Remember, if you allow Najib to continue to distribute MCA traditional posts to others which are forever lobbying the prime minister - you will never regain your respect among Malaysian citizens, especially the Chinese community. Of course, the prime minister may disagree at first (because he likes to be able dish out cabinet posts around in return for support from those given the posts) but Datuk Liow Tiong Lai must stand firm with Najib -- or forever be at his mercy as he can play dish out and withdraw cabinet posts with the MCA at will, qualifying that with the saying the PM has the prerogative to appoint or sack ministers. Don't buy that. Ask him what does take the MCA for? Don't cave in because you are afraid you may lose your Health Minister post; you won't, as the MCA being the second largest component in BN, Najib would feel a big loss or void if the MCA decides to leave the coalition (and may galvanize other components to leave too). As much as Najib wishes to keep as many cabinet posts as his so-called prerogatives, in order to sell them to all and sundries for return support, it will be unethical for him to deal with MCA that way. If he persists he's no leader and should be shunned. Checked.

The MCA leaders have been labelled as subservient to UMNO not becaus it (UMNO)was bigger but because MCA leaders were wimpy or wimpish, lacking in strong characters, or maybe even selfish. Checked.

But then again, if the MCA leaders feel that the time to go for broke hasn't come yet - what with so few elected MPs and Najib won't likely be rattled - I have to agree with that. Checked.

OK,then, wait for better circumstances. Checked.

Actually UMNO leaders never looked down on MCA leaders during Tun Mahathir's adninistration. UMNO leaders only began to view MCA leaders as beggars for cabinet posts by accident after the DAP had labelled them such. And Najib went on to rub salt into their wounds by mostly appointing them to junior cabinet posts like deputy ministers or finance minister II! I know some MCA leaders loath to stand firm for their rights because they are afraid.. to lose the cabinet posts and the perks that come with it. If that's how the MCA leaders feel, they are not leaders but selfish politicians piggy-backing on the MCA name for personal interests. They are just like beggars like the DAP says. And if it should come to that, the Chinese people should wash their hands of them. Checked.

Despite Being Represented By None Other Than The Former Judge Of The Same Bench Anwar Will Be Found Guilty

I still think - despite the former federal judge intervened to argue for Anwar and debunked the whole charge (he painstakingly contested every aspect of the sodomy charge and stripped them layer by layer until bare... of reasons to even warrant the charge at all) - Anwar will be found guilty! Checked.

The whole bench of the federal court will undoubtedly feel they will be unfair to Anwar if they find him guilty - especially after listening to the crystal clear and thorough argument by their own peer Tan Sri Siri Ram to which probably none of them disputed - but.. still would do it! Why? Because they want to be 'fair to both sides' - that's why! Checked.

Because this was the prosecutor's own plan when he....demanded an enhanced sentence (20 years). And it became very tempting for the justices. A way out for their conscience if you know what I mean. Checked.

The prosecutor was telling the judges ' you all will be failing in your duties if you acquit Anwar; however, you won't if you find him guilty but jail him only five years. That's all we ask. We won't mind so much a short sentence as long as it's not less than five years - or a fine of RM2000!' Checked.

A win-win, sic, for both sides - according to the government lawyer! Checked.

But then again, the justices actually don't have to bow to anyone but to decide according to the facts of the case - they don't owe the government or Anwar - or anybody anything for that matter - to feel compelled in their judgement. They owe it to the tax payers, if any, and no one else who pay their salaries - to do the right thing! Checked.

Anwar Was Done In And Put Away By A Slick Lawyer

The Drl Blog

Anwar Was Done In And Put Away By A Slick Lawyer

The fact that the federal court bench retorted that a five year sentence was not excessive, somewhat confirmed most Malaysians' suspicion that it was not a fair deliberation weighing all arguments - it was an expected decision! The justices skipped the fair or not fair part of the argument - but dwelt on the five-year jail term to justify the upholding of the Appeal Court finding - arguing they could give Anwar twenty years as demanded by the government. They meant they had helped Anwar. Checked.

And your argument that you are not seeking help from the court but justice, if you intend to put forward for the court to consider, may not be entertained. The lead prosecutor may have your argument easily overruled. In another word, they had to be cruel to be kind! But then again, none of these would have come about if not for Tan Sri Shafee (No wonder Anwar fought tooth and nail to thwart the UMNO lawyer's appointment as the deputy prosecutor - and the government made sure he became the prosecutor) - Shafee proved he was not viewed as one of the slick lawyers in Malaysia for nothing. He relied on a strategy...to appeal to the conscience of the judges - that if they balked at punishing Anwar with twenty years jail, he would understand - at the same time, though, he pleaded for Saiful's sake as his life was wrecked by Anwar, according to him - please give a win-win decision he asked the court - by finding Anwar guilty but upholding the five-year sentence! In the end, justice was served -- for Saiful! Checked.

And what about Saiful not washing himself for two days in order to preserve the DNA sperm - for what? Go figure. Checked.

And the DNA sample was pristine - even after being placed in a place at room temperature for extended time - which two foreign experts scoffed at. Never mind; our court accepted, that's all that matters. To hell with foreign experts. Checked.

And Tan sri Shafee is one slick lawyer..er prosecutor, Checked.

Not Easy Being MCA Leaders

The Drl Blog

The MCA Has No Choice But to Jettison All Present Top Leaders And Reinvent Itself

Not Easy Being MCA Leaders

This is exactly why the MCA was in the free fall. Most of its leaders lack strong will and leadership caliber of past presidents or leaders. Leaders like Lee San Choon, for example, who commanded respect not only from the Chinese but also non-Chinese. Checked.

During his time who dared to be seen as unjustly discriminating against Chinese Malaysians - let alone actually discriminated against them. Checked.

We all yearned for the good old days, didn't we, when we were united in our hearts and actions. When Chinese regard Malays with love and respect and vice versa. Now I am not saying the Malays and the Chinese hate each other, although certain quarters might want that. But the Malays I hate to say this, are not exactly rushing to defend their Chinese counterparts although they are clearly being victimized. And this is the single greatest flaw of an otherwise great race. They are basically all about self-preservation. Like to mind their own business. If you want to find someone to help each other when the chips are down - so to speak- or what they call a friend in need is a friend indeed, don't find the Malays. Checked. (Lest I am misunderstood; I don't mean there is no good Malay to be pally with. There are.)

On the contrary, I believe the Chinese would still care about the Malays and I have no doubt they will standby a Malay if he or she is being victimized in this polarized situation. Checked.

It's all up to the information and misinformation an individual comes into contact with; how he treats it - swallow everything, or only the good part, or throw out the whole lot. But I like to digress. Clear and present, there's the danger of leadership vacuum in Malaysia's second largest political party. Most of the old guards are wallowing in inferiority complex and acute subordination; so that when the former law minister called a spade a spade (namely they failed to speak out against instances of discrimination leveled against the Chinese Malaysians they were supposed to look out for), they misunderstood his intention. Checked.

All they could think of was he was opposition-friendly, and an outsider. It never occurred to them that this Said Ibrahim could be sincere and just wanted to help. They agreed among themselves if they agreed to rejoin the cabinet they did it to contribute to the betterment of Malaysia. Checked.

Exactly; if they wanted to help make Malaysia better they should take the bull by its horn ( stand firm on race relation issues). Checked.

Only pragmatic and just leader like Said Ibrahim would thrust his neck into the guillotine for nothing. The MCA leaders seemed to balk at heeding Said's advice - like Tun Ghafar Baba's to the then sparring leaders of MCA of yesteryears - to try their best to fix the racial polarization problems plaguing the country. The fact that he chose to single out Chinese but not MIC leaders for the task meant one thing: While he's aware the so-called polarization involved both Indians and Chinese and the Malays, he was concerned over the recent events. Checked.

While MCA leaders were all for protecting the Chinese community's rights - which their fore- fathers or past presidents did admirably well - they seemed held back by something...read Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha's statement. Checked.

To a lesser extent, Ti Lian Ker also joined Kong in throwing a spanner in the works. Why rejoin the cabinet just to fix the racial shenanigans that seemed to pulverize the once happy Malaysian family of Malays, Chinese, Indians and others, they ask. They seemed unaware we are not that happy Malaysian family we used to be during Tun Dr. Mahathir's time. Worrisome as it's these MCA leaders chose to talk about Malaysia's betterment, in general. Checked.

They didn't or couldn't set priority. All have good intention in their hearts, I am sure, but they were not united in putting their shoulders to the task at hand (as highlighted by Said Ibrahim) and clearly lacked urgency. Checked.

But while they dithered Rome burned! Checked.

For one, much as they wanted to help their Chinese people, they could only do their jobs with one eye on the task at hand, that's if they wanted to take it on at all, while another casting warily elsewhere. Checked.

Sad. But true. And nothing they could do, it seemed. Or they seemed to point out. Helplessly. In fact, to be quite frank, the MCA could do with a better set of leaders. But lest I am misunderstood, I am not calling for the removal of Datuk Liow Tiong Lai and his deputy; Wanita chief or Youth chief -- not at all. They were democratically elected leaders; the only way to remove them is through elections in the general assembly; or specially convened extra general meeting. What's more with the endorsement of the prime minister himself, who in the whole of MCA would dare to challenge Datuk Seri Liow? However, what needs to be said needs to be said, however unsavory: the present way or scenario is unsustainable. Something has to be done, and it may be opposed by the present leadership (known to be solidly backed by Najib himself)! But if the current leadership are men or women who really love the MCA, which I believe they do, they should recuse themselves Checked.

Well, brothers and sister, fret not, I say. If all else failed, I mean if the MCA failed, if the leaders failed, there would still be the Law of the universe to take care of things. Nothing, I mean everything, in this universe is governed by its Law: Nothing lasts forever. Whether you are emperor of Rome, or Adolf Hitler of Germany, or UMNO of Malaysia, like fresh milk, you have shelf life. You rise you then fall. And you return to nothingness! Checked.

The Israeli Defense Forces Are Legendary

The Drl Blog

During The Six Days Israel Had Nver Been Lonelier

The Israeli defense forces hold the record as the only armed forces to remain undefeated.Their fighting skills and spirits displayed during the June 6, 1967 war when outnumbered 10-1 by the combined Arab army, staved off what could be the biggest threat to the Jews' survival since the Holocaust, were legendary. Checked.

Just as well, as back then the Israelis lacked the numbers to lose, lick the wounds and fight again. The Jewish state clearly lacked the dept for a normal warfare. Their doctrine which must take into consideration the size of their country, population, buffer zones separating them from their enemies, and of course, the size of their total armed forces, was to maximize the use of their scarce and small resources. Checked.

In another word, the Israelis must fight with bravery and precision and win all battles and win quickly, or lose. Checked.

Fortunately, what the Jews lacked in the turbulent days - the math - they amply made up in no shortage of people with brains, skills, and bravery (not to mention being God's favorite children, as they say), which they used to help their lone, small country to not only survive the combined Arab army's attack but went on to defeat it and seized swaths of territories to double their country's size. Checked.

During the June 6, 1967 war, Israel was at the cross road. They knew due to the overwhelming odds against them, despite their courage and tenacity to prevail, they could not predict the outcome. During the duration of the 6 days the Jews never felt lonelier in their lives. Except for the French who provided the Mirage and then slapped Israel with arms embargo;and the Americans who supplied the Sky hawks before not after the war, the world held their breath but no one lifted a finger to help. Do or die, they were on their own! And judging by the hatred spewed by the Arab leaders and men, women in the streets shouting loud and clear what they would do to the defeated Jews if they prevailed. Checked.

How true was what the Arabs said of themselves, 'We could lose ten times and we are still not finish. But for the Israelis, if they do, even once, they will be!' They didn't have the maths or dept! Checked.

Clash Of Titans

A Perfect Match Or An Intended Sacrifice Of One Who Had Fallen From Grace?

A perfect match, they say. Was that all? Or was it the intended sacrifice of Datuk Abdul Gani Othman who had fallen from grace with someone, who instead of directly relieving him of his post, chose a more subtle way to achieve the same result. "You are fired!" Still, the Tan Sri Abdul Gani maybe none the wiser.

It was as clash of titans - it certainly was. Tan Sri Othman was the reigning MB of the state of Johor, the birth place of UMNO, where the contest took place. Therefor, Tan Sri Othman was an important UMNO leader; a heavyweight. Yes, important he maybe, but not indispensable.

Like milk, everything has expiry date, and if you have fallen from grace you are finished. Nothing lasts in this world. Checked.

The Tan Sri must have felt grateful to the power that be to be so kind as to give him a chance to prove himself; or wondered what had he done to negate all that he had done for the party UMNO? He was not angry, just sad. That after so much sacrifice he had made for his party, he was shown the door despite still having more politicking left in him. Checked.

Age can not be the culprit according to his calculation. For he was not a day older than Lim Kit Siang, the man who was the other titan (in the Clash of The Titans).

He can't help but did feel it was diabolical cunning at the finest (of someone) to try to get rid of him. If age could not be the factor, losing the 'clash of titans' slug-fest' should not be a reason too as many previous losers of elections were given second chances.

As for the victor of the clash, who said he went into the slug-fest without knowing how it was going to turn out, and he said he felt no joy or sense of trump from besting his opponent - he proved that he's more than a match for any man anywhere. Checked.

But then again, there was no surprising there. Lim Kit Siang was expected to prevail because of his vast experience in politics which spanned many decades. He was a man who had seen all, fought all. Checked.
